LION families reflect the rich cultural, linguistic, and social diversity of the Hunts Point community. Understanding who our families are allows us to design programs and practices that respect their identities, experiences, and voices. We view family background as a strength that enriches our school community.
Families
Family Engagement
At LION Charter School, family engagement is a shared commitment rooted in trust, communication, and collaboration. We partner with families to support the whole child through meaningful relationships, advocacy, and responsive support. We work together with shared responsibility and mutual respect to create a connected community where students and families can thrive.

Our Commitment to Families
Family Demographics
- Families represent a wide range of cultures, languages, and lived experiences.
- Programming is designed with intentionality to be culturally responsive and inclusive.
- Family voices and experiences help shape our school environment.
LION as a Community School
LION is a hub where families access academic support, community programs, and wraparound services. Through partnerships with local organizations, we work to remove barriers and provide meaningful support for the whole child and whole family.
- LION is a trusted community anchor in Hunts Point.
- Partnerships expand access to services and opportunities for families.
- Our approach is grounded in collaboration, connection, and shared responsibility.
Family Resources
We are committed to connecting families with the resources they need to thrive. When needs arise beyond our capacity, we connect families with trusted organizations to provide support. From emergency assistance to food and supply distributions, we respond to families with compassion and respect.
- Families are supported through referrals and direct assistance when possible.
- Directors of Family Engagement offer confidential help during times of crisis.
- Food, clothing, and other support are provided through giveaways and pop-up events.

When a school stands with a family, a child stands a little taller.
That understanding is personal, and it guides how I connect with our parents today. Our family program is not just a program; it’s the driving force of our school community. It is where connection becomes action, where families feel seen and supported, and where students learn that they are surrounded by adults who believe in their potential.
Herb Fixler Family Engagement Center
A hub for families, community, and student success, the Herb Fixler Family Engagement Center opened in Fall 2024 as a welcoming space dedicated to strengthening partnerships between families, students, and staff at LION Charter School. Named in honor of Herb Fixler, founding Chair of LION’s Board of Trustees, the Center recognizes his extraordinary leadership and deep belief in the power of LION’s Family Program to change lives.

Communities rise together. LION uplifts family voices through storytelling, leadership opportunities, and community-centered events.
We work closely with families to provide consistent support for every LION student. Open communication builds trust and ensures students feel understood, supported, and encouraged at home and school. Shared goals between LION and the home are a cornerstone of students’ success. When families grow together, LION becomes a more connected, resilient, and united community.

Strong Partnerships
Community Engagement
LION is committed to building partnerships with schools, community organizations, and neighborhood leaders across the South Bronx and beyond. We strategically pursue partnerships that advance equity and inclusion for students and families.
By working alongside the community, attending and promoting events aligned with our families’ needs and interests, and offering LION space as a resource, we strengthen our role as a trusted community partner.

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is watching families take what they learn and bring meaningful changes into their homes.
Witnessing families achieve professional growth while simultaneously strengthening their family bonds is deeply inspiring, and it serves as a daily reminder of the remarkable resilience and strength that define our LION community.
LION Cares
K–12 Family Pop-Up
Held during some of our family events, LION Cares is an initiative designed to meet real needs and celebrate the power of community. The pop-up is more than just an event offering books, fresh produce, shelf-stable food, and essential items. It's a powerful reminder of what happens when a community unites with purpose.
