Student Life

Summer

LION has offered an academic summer program since 2007 to ensure students are prepared for the grade they will enter in the fall. More recently, we introduced the Summer Boost program, designed for rising first‑ through ninth‑graders.

Summer Program Highlights

Using the RISE ELA curriculum from the Lavinia Group, teachers help build strong readers and thinkers through engaging, age‑appropriate literacy instruction rooted in the science of reading.

Students strengthen foundational skills and deepen comprehension so they return to school confident and ready to succeed.

  • Systematic phonics instruction builds decoding and fluency skills through structured, sequential lessons for younger students
  • Close reading and novel studies develop comprehension, critical thinking, and discussion skills for older students
  • Author and genre studies help students analyze text, identify themes, and understand an author’s craft

The Lavinia Group’s RISE math curriculum strengthens essential skills and deepens conceptual understanding through focused instruction and meaningful practice.

Students concentrate on key grade‑level standards, helping them move into the new school year with confidence and momentum.

  • Emphasis on two to three priority math standards per grade to reinforce foundational concepts and prevent unfinished learning
  • Problem‑solving routines and real‑world applications build reasoning and persistence
  • Engaging, interactive lessons promote discussion, collaboration, and mathematical thinking

LION’s Summer Boost program offers a vibrant enrichment program that nurtures creativity, curiosity, and physical well-being.

Through hands‑on experiences in the arts, STEM, and movement, students explore new interests, collaborate with peers, and build confidence.

  • Arts and crafts experiences encourage creativity, self‑expression, and fine motor skills
  • STEM‑based activities spark curiosity, promote problem‑solving, and introduce students to inquiry and experimentation
  • Fitness and movement opportunities support physical health, teamwork, and positive habits
  • Collaborative projects help students practice communication, teamwork, and perseverance

Field trips are a highlight of the Summer Boost experience, extending learning beyond the classroom and giving students opportunities to explore, connect, and build community together.

These shared experiences help students apply skills in real‑world settings while creating positive summer memories.

  • Off‑campus experiences complement academic and enrichment learning
  • Students explore cultural, recreational, and educational spaces across the city
  • Promote curiosity, confidence, and independence in new environments

The Summer Boost experience concludes with community‑centered celebrations that bring students, families, and staff together to honor growth, learning, and creativity. These end‑of‑program events give families a meaningful opportunity to see what students have accomplished while celebrating the relationships built throughout the summer.

Students proudly share their work through gallery walks and performances that highlight creativity and confidence. Families enjoy food, raffles, awards, and hands‑on activities that make the celebrations festive and inclusive. To keep the momentum going, students also leave with engaging books, kits, and materials designed to inspire continued learning and exploration for the rest of the summer.

  • Honor growth, learning, and creativity
