This February, our community lived out the words of Middle School Principal Ada Garcia:
“At LION, we are committed to celebrating Black history and Black excellence not just this month, but every day. We are choosing to be even louder, prouder, and more intentional in how we uplift Black history, culture, excellence, and joy.“
Throughout the month, our staff and students brought that commitment to life through joyful learning, powerful performances, and moments of connection that will stay with us for months to come.
Our elementary students enjoyed an unforgettable day of workshops led by the Phi Beta Sigma step team, dancehall performers The PyroTechs, double-dutch masters Flossie Possie, Burkinbe Drummers, and LION staff. The annual Black History Month Showcase once again filled the auditorium with a celebration of joy through movement, music, and dance. Featuring our guest artists and LION performing arts students, the showcase captured the spirit of joy and excellence at the heart of Black History Month. A heartfelt roar out goes to Ms. Nicolosi for preparing not only an amazing showcase, but also a day of learning that our students and staff will never forget.
Our middle school community also came together for a vibrant student and staff showcase. The event featured a choir performance, top-ten music video countdowns, comedic commercial breaks, and a student and staff tribute to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The audience moved from dancing in their seats, to laughing together, to wiping away tears during an emotional scene performed by Teacher Davis and sixth-grader Dorian. We must also celebrate the incomparable hype duo, Mr. Milian and Ms. Lawrence, whose energy kept the audience engaged throughout the countdown segments. Thank you to Ms. Davis for her leadership in organizing and directing such an impressive production, and to Ms. Morris for curating the stunning gallery walk of student artwork that followed.
