Creating a Sense of Community on the Court

On November 17th, LION Middle School gathered staff and students to participate in the first ever Turkey Bowl basketball game hosted by the Middle School Director of School Culture Ms. Whitney Helton and Special Education Teacher Imani Burroughs. Team Camara, led by Special Education Teacher Muhammed Camara, faced off against Team Chase, captained by Middle School Teacher Lessey Chase. Students and staff worked together as teammates as they battled up and down the court for bragging rights. The game was called down the middle by Middle School Teacher Tamia Fulton, who donned the black and white striped referee jersey. We were also treated to a special performance by the Middle School Step Team featuring Ms. Davis, Ms. Jaiteh, Ms. Morris, Janiyah Stanley and Mikayla Johnson. Congratulations to the winners – Team Camara!!

Ms. Burroughs shared her gratitude for everyone who participated and came to support the players: “LION’s inaugural Turkey Bowl set high expectations for years to come. Not only was there a great amount of staff and student participation, but so many came to support their fellow peers. Whether playing in the game or helping to run the popcorn stand, students were invested in all parts of the event. One of the highlights was 8th Grader Kayden Sessoms hosting the event, who left everybody feeling like we had attended a professional game.” The event was a huge success and brought a sense of pride to the school community. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the first LION Middle School Turkey Bowl and hope it becomes an annual LION tradition!
