Reflecting on our inaugural year as Leaders In Our Neighborhood (LION) Charter School, we are so proud of all our students and staff have accomplished. Our staff has collaborated across and within divisions to align their work with students, and the progress is evident. Our students have shown tremendous academic growth and continue to evolve as young leaders in our community. They have showcased their curiosity in the classroom as well as through the pursuit of their potential in athletics, the arts, and the myriad enrichment opportunities available both at LION and the organizations with whom we partner.
Likewise, our students have demonstrated their commitment to social justice both inside our school and in the community, distributing books and reading to our elementary students, partnering with the 41st precinct to provide new toys for children in the neighborhood, and engaging in critical conversations with community leaders. We have provided opportunities for our students to expand their horizons, from third grade students seeing “The Lion King” on Broadway to 20 middle school students traveling abroad for our first World Scholars Program international experience to our Class of 2024 students engaging in overnight college visits that changed their view of the college process. Lastly, we celebrated key transition points in our students’ lives, which you will see highlighted in this issue.
As we embark upon our second year as LION, we are excited for the rich possibilities of what is to come in the 2023-2024 school year. In this issue, you will read about the new Herb Fixler Family Engagement Center we are creating to provide a home and resource center for our families within our high school building. Thank you, Herb, for your commitment to our school and your belief in the transformative power of our family program. You will meet our Division Directors and members of our staff, learn about our summer program, and hear the story of our alumna, Sara Luna. Every individual’s story is unique and important to the summative impact of our school community.
We invite you to come visit us, meet our staff and students, and see the amazing work we do each and every day. We appreciate all our supporters who help make this work possible and allow us to continue to expand and evolve our program. Thank you for your belief in our school mission and the potential of our students.
Sincerely,
Celia Sosa, Chief Executive Officer
