LION Fall Highlights

We are excited to share some of the highlights at LION Charter School this fall! From new programs and curricula to sports teams and clubs, we are ensuring our students have opportunities for success inside and outside the classroom.

Our Elementary School is committed to creating a strong literacy foundation for our youngest learners. Through a comprehensive program, including phonics, reading fluency, and reading comprehension, faculty are helping students build the fundamental literacy skills they need to thrive as they continue their academic journey in middle and high school. Students have abundant opportunities to explore books independently so they can develop a love of reading at an early age. A new after school literacy program will also provide select second and third grade students with the additional support they need to become confident readers.

Our Middle School has continued its tradition of offering three high school courses as part of the core program for eighth grade students. This year students are enrolled in Algebra 1, Earth Science, and Global 1. Taking these three courses enables students to begin their ninth grade year with credits accumulated toward their high school diploma requirements. Additionally, passing the Algebra 1 and Earth Science Regents exams positions students to enter high school with 40% of the exam credits they need to earn a Regents diploma.

This year our High School launched Pre-Advanced Placement (AP) curricula in nine courses: Algebra 1 and 2, Biology, Chemistry, English 1 and 2, Geometry, and Global History 1 and 2. This curricular shift supports our college readiness focus and will ensure that students are prepared for the rigors of advanced coursework when they enroll in AP classes. Passing an AP course is one of four ways students can demonstrate they are college ready. Currently 136 of our sophomores, juniors, and seniors are enrolled in at least one of the eight AP courses we offer. Check out “A Special Roar Out to Our Academic Leaders at LION” to see how many students earned prestigious AP awards for their performance on AP exams this past spring!

Our Middle and High School offer a plethora of extracurricular activities so students can pursue additional interests connected to their potential. Middle school students can choose from 12 different clubs and high school students from 15. Options include our Pride Press, Genders & Sexualities Alliance, World Scholars Program (featured in the premiere issue of LION Character Matters), debate team, student government, honors societies, music, dance teams, and more! LION Athletics features seven sports teams in each division this year, including girls volleyball, boys flag football, and men’s varsity soccer this fall. Make sure to follow us on social media to hear more about LION clubs and athletics.

We appreciate all the faculty and staff whose hard work and dedication have made these opportunities for our students possible. We know there will be many more to come!
